Instagram Auto DM: The Complete Guide for Creators and Brands
If you have ever posted a reel that said "Comment LINK and I'll DM you" and then spent your evening copy-pasting the same message to 400 people, this guide is for you. Instagram auto DM lets you send that message automatically, the moment someone comments or messages you, without breaking Instagram's rules. Below we cover how it works, what Meta allows (and what it doesn't), and how to set it up in about ten minutes.
What is Instagram auto DM?
Instagram auto DM is an automated direct message sent in response to something a person does on your account: commenting a keyword on a post or reel, sending you a DM, replying to your story, or mentioning you in theirs. Instead of you opening each conversation, a tool listens for these events through Instagram's API and replies within seconds with the message you prepared, often with a link button, a discount code, or a question.
The most popular use is comment to DM: you ask viewers to comment a word like "GUIDE", and everyone who does receives the guide in their inbox. It works because commenting is low effort for the viewer, the comments boost your reach, and the DM lands in a private, high-attention space where people actually click.
Creators use it to deliver freebies and affiliate links. Coaches use it to book discovery calls. D2C brands use it to share product links and answer "price?" comments. Real-estate agents use it to send brochures and collect phone numbers. See our features page for niche-specific examples.
Official API vs risky bots
There are two very different ways tools automate Instagram DMs, and the difference matters for your account's safety.
Built on the official Instagram API
- You log in through Instagram's own screen
- No password shared with the tool
- Meta reviews and approves the app's permissions
- Replies only to people who interacted first
- You can revoke access anytime from Instagram settings
Unofficial bots
- Ask for your Instagram password
- Simulate a phone or browser to send messages
- Often mass-DM strangers or followers
- Trigger security checks, action blocks or bans
- Violate Instagram's terms of use
InstaAuto uses the official Instagram API with Instagram Login. The permissions it requests (instagram_business_basic, instagram_business_manage_messages and instagram_business_manage_comments) are approved by Meta. We never see your password.
Meta rules you must follow
Every legitimate auto DM tool works inside the same rules. Knowing them saves you from expecting features that no compliant tool can offer.
1. The 24-hour messaging window
You can send messages to a person only within 24 hours of their last interaction with you, such as a DM they sent. After the window closes, automated messages are generally not allowed until they message you again. That is why follow-ups need to happen quickly. Read the full breakdown in our 24-hour rule explainer.
2. One private reply per comment, within 7 days
When someone comments, Instagram lets a business send one "private reply" DM to that comment, and only within 7 days of the comment. If the person replies to that DM, a normal conversation (and the 24-hour window) opens. InstaAuto sends the private reply instantly, so the 7-day limit rarely matters in practice.
3. No unsolicited bulk DMs
You cannot DM all your followers, or a list of accounts who never contacted you. Meta does not permit broadcasts like this through the API, and InstaAuto deliberately has no broadcast feature. Every DM InstaAuto sends is a reply to something the person did.
4. Rate limits
Instagram limits how many API calls an account can make in a period. If a reel goes viral and thousands comment at once, some DMs may be queued or delayed. This is normal and protects your account.
How to set up auto DM with InstaAuto
- 1
Switch to a Professional account
In the Instagram app go to Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account. Creator or Business both work. It is free and you keep your followers.
- 2
Create your InstaAuto account and connect Instagram
Sign up free, then click Connect Instagram. You are sent to Instagram's official login screen to approve permissions. Also turn on "Allow access to messages" under Instagram Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools, if it is off.
- 3
Create a rule
Pick a trigger (comment, DM, story reply or story mention). For comments, choose whether the rule applies to all posts, only Reels or Feed posts, or one specific post or reel from your recent media.
- 4
Set the keyword and message
Enter keywords like LINK, PRICE or GUIDE and choose exact or contains matching. Write the DM, add up to 3 link buttons or quick replies, and optionally a public comment reply such as "Check your DMs 📩".
- 5
Test it
From a different Instagram account, comment the keyword on the post. You should receive the DM within seconds. Instagram does not deliver private replies to your own comments, so always test from a second account.
Triggers: comments, DMs and stories
- Comment keyword: the workhorse. Great for reels with a clear call to action. Details in the comment to DM guide.
- DM keyword: auto-reply when someone messages "price", "menu" or "catalogue". Add a default catch-all reply for anything else, or let AI replies answer using your business info.
- Story replies: reply automatically when people respond to a story, ideal for "reply YES for the link" stories.
- Story mentions: thank people who tag you and send them a discount code or a reshare request.
The follow gate
With the ask-to-follow gate, the first DM asks the person to follow you and shows an "I followed ✅" button. When they tap it, InstaAuto checks whether they actually follow you before sending the link. If they don't, it politely asks again. This turns freebie seekers into followers, which compounds reach on every future post. Use it for high-value freebies; for simple price answers, skip it so you don't add friction. The follow gate is included from the Starter plan (₹199/month).
Lead capture and click tracking
A DM conversation is the perfect place to collect a lead. InstaAuto can ask for an email address or phone number inside the DM, validate the reply, and save it in your Leads list, which you can export as CSV for your email tool or CRM. Coaches use it to build a webinar list; real-estate agents use it to collect numbers for site visits.
Click tracking wraps your links in short redirect links so you can see how many people clicked from each rule. Combined with analytics (DMs sent, comments replied, clicks and leads per day over the last 30 days) on the Pro plan, you'll know which reels actually drive results, not just views. More on this in our reels lead generation playbook.
Best practices
- Say the keyword clearly in the reel, on screen and in the caption. One short, unique word works best.
- Accept variations. Use "contains" matching and add variants such as "link", "Link please", "LINK 🙏".
- Keep the first DM short and put the main action in a button, not a long paragraph.
- Sound human. Write the way you talk. Hinglish is fine if your audience uses it; see our templates.
- Follow up within 24 hours while the messaging window is open, for example with a quick reply asking if they need help.
- Use a public comment reply so others see that commenting works, which increases comments.
Common mistakes
- Testing with your own account and assuming it's broken.
- Forgetting to enable "Allow access to messages" in Instagram settings.
- Using a common word like "yes" on all posts, which fires on unrelated comments. Target a specific post instead.
- Expecting to DM people days later or broadcast to all followers. Meta's rules don't allow it.
- Trusting password-based bots for "unlimited" DMs and risking the account you spent years building.
Frequently asked questions
Is Instagram auto DM allowed?
Yes, when it uses the official Instagram API and follows Meta messaging rules. Tools like InstaAuto use Meta-approved permissions and only reply to people who interacted with you first. Bots that log in with your password and mass-message strangers break Instagram terms.
Do I need a business account for auto DM?
You need an Instagram Professional account, which can be either Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot use the official messaging API. Switching is free in the Instagram app settings.
Can I send a DM to all my followers at once?
No. Meta does not allow unsolicited bulk DMs or broadcasts to everyone through the API. You can only reply to people within 24 hours of their message or comment interaction. InstaAuto deliberately has no broadcast feature.
How many DMs can I send per month?
It depends on your plan. InstaAuto Free includes 500 DMs a month, Starter (₹199) 3,000, Pro (₹499) 15,000 and Agency (₹1,499) 75,000. Instagram rate limits also apply.
Will auto DM get my account banned?
Using the official API with Meta-approved permissions is the safe route. The risk comes from unofficial bots that use your password, scrape, or spam. Keep messages relevant, reply only to people who asked, and avoid spammy wording.
Can auto DM reply in Hindi or Hinglish?
Yes. You write your own rule messages in any language, and InstaAuto AI replies can be set to English, Hindi, Hinglish, or to match the language of the customer.
